The Spider

The Spider is one of our cool, yet simple, inventions.  We named it the Spider because if you turn it legs down, the legs look like spider legs.   The Spider could skedaddle away!  It’s a work-horse that can be used with the Adjustable Rig, Woo2 or combined with other pieces for new cooking experiences.

The Spider hangs from the five dimples on the fire ring, does not interfere with a grid sitting on the fire ring and weighs less than one pound.

The Spider specifications are:

  • Ring’s inside diameter is roughly 11.25 inches.
  • Designed to hold woks, pizza stones, pans or grids.
  • Hangs approximately two inches into the fire ring. buy now

Searing with the Spider

Warning: For your protection, you need to understand the principals and preventive methods surrounding a Flashback. Please consult your ceramic manufacturer or retailer for Flashback details before attempting any cooks on the Spider, Woo2 or Adjustable Rig.

The Spider holds BGE’s 15 inch medium (egg) cast iron grid. Add the Rig or Woo2 and you have a can’t miss combination for searing and roasting.

Producing that perfect steak is a two step process: sear then roast. The Spider/cast iron grid combo allows you to sear inside the fire ring. By searing closer to the lump, you can get the same char results but with lower temperatures than if searing on top of the fire ring. When the desired char is obtained, you can either rest the steak or move it immediately onto the Woo2 or Adjustable Rig’s raised grid. Here, you stop the searing process and basically roast the meat to the desired doneness. This two step process, sear then roast, is akin to a chef searing on a stove top and sliding the pan in the oven to finish.

16-inch length tongs are recommended for handling food on the Spider/grid combo (link to accessory page). Hand protection is at your discretion.

The searing grid can remain in place while finishing the cook on the upper grid. Depending on the fire, a piece or two of wood can be dropped on the searing grid for smoke. This keeps the wood from direct contact with the lump, so the wood only smolders.

After the cook, the Spider or raised grid is a great place to re-season the cast iron grid.  Just brush the cast iron clean, spray it with cooking oil and return it to the egg. It will re-season as the egg cools.  Right after dinner is a good time to do this.

Wokking with the Spider

The spider holds a 14 or 16 inch round bottom wok.  Wok cooking can be a fun change of pace.  And, there is more than Asian foods to wok.

Blackening with the Spider

The Spider holds a 14" Bayou Classic griddle for blackening.  However,  for the griddle to fit in the fire ring, the two side handles must be cut-off.  It’s not difficult to do!  The griddle is generally found online for less than $20 and offers two differing sides: flat and ribbed. If you have an old cast iron pan, 12 to15-inch diameter and are willing to sacrifice the handle, it will work too.  The griddle or pan can be re-seasoned like the cast iron grid.

If you are fan of thin burgers, then this griddle method may be for you.  These burgers cook very quick, approx. one minute per side.  The finished picture really doesn’t do the burgers justice!
